Fitness Motivation this winter
Winter workouts can often feel more daunting than their summery versions, right? The nights are darker, days grey, plus the nativity needs watching, parties need attendance, and your warm, cosy bed is beckoning you; it's so easy to let motivation slip away. And I'm with you; who doesn't want to curl up on the sofa and be in bed by 8 during the countdown to the festive season?
But fear not! I'm here to share some tips to keep your motivation blazing bright throughout winter. Let's keep that fire alive on your journey to better health!
Sign Up for an Event!
Feeling the slump? Time to refocus. Ever thought about signing up for a walking or running challenge? These events happen all year round and, at varying levels, can reignite your drive to keep moving. From thrilling obstacles like Hyrox and Tough Mudder to invigorating charity swims, these events keep you on track and promise a lot of fun! Registering for an event in the summer or spring will help keep you focused on building that strong foundation through the winter.
Get an Accountability Partner!
Looking for a boost? Find an accountability buddy! It's one of the most powerful ways to stay committed during these chilly months. I'm not just talking about working out together—though that's a bonus! Instead, connect with someone you trust to cheer you on, nudge you to stick with it and help you achieve your goals even when you may not be together in the sweat of it.
Remember, fitness pros can be your biggest allies.
Find Your Tribe!
Do you usually fly solo? It's much easier to lace up your shoes when the sun shines. But believe me, the power of a group is unmatched! Whether it's team sports or group classes, getting involved with others keeps your energy up and builds a fantastic support network that can lead to new friendships. For those of you who find planning your workouts tedious or are losing your way, get someone else on the case! Classes, groups or personal training sessions allow you to just show up and move.
Less stress, more sweat.
Remember Your 'Why'!
Take a moment to reflect on what's driving you. Why is your health important to you? Why did you start exercising? Think about your true motivation— is it feeling confident in your summer wardrobe, wanting more energy, mood improvement, or prepping for a particular fitness event in the spring? Keep those reasons in mind to reignite your spark. If you go off track now, getting back will feel so tough in the new year. Don't forget exercise is all about how you feel in your mind and body, not just how you look!
Have a Go-To Workout for Bad Weather!
When the weather turns foul, don't let it stop you! Keep your favourite quick workout handy—one that doesn't require much thought so you can still stay active. Try the 10-minute rule! No matter where you are—whether at the gym, home or out for a brisk walk in full waterproofs—give yourself just 10 minutes. If you're still not feeling it after that, no worries—you've accomplished something!
Little HITT, or circuit I like, involves setting your timer for one-minute intervals over 10 minutes for a fun circuit. Switch up movements every minute to keep things energetic. Gradually make movements harder or heavier as you get warm. Reach 10mins, job done. Keep it simple, and just keep moving!
